McKee 2016 Gallery

Judge's Statement

What a delight and honor it has been viewing and awarding prizes for the incredible artwork by the youth of San Joaquin County.

The overall strength and quality of the artworks submitted by the students and their teachers were quite impressive.  This attests to our talented youth and to the teachers who have nurtured and guided them to make these compelling works of art.

As an artist, art professor and gallerist, I look at and critique artwork every day.  Many of the strengths I look for in art I also looked for in this exhibit.

The young artists chosen for awards combined originality, craftsmanship and content that conveyed a message in their work.

While I believe that the work I selected for awards stands out in a variety of ways, all of the participating artists are due recognition. My greatest hope is that these young developing artists continue to create throughout their lifetimes!

Finally, I would like to thank The Haggin Museum and Curator of Education Lisa Cooperman for entrusting me with the challenging and very rewarding opportunity to award prizes for the 85th Annual McKee Student Art Contest and Exhibition.
