78th Annual Robert T. McKee Student Art Contest & Exhibition
February 7-April 5, 2009
General Info List of Award Winners

Opening Reception photoThe Haggin Museum is pleased to once again feature the work of student artists from the public and private schools of San Joaquin County.

For 78 years the museum has honored the vision of founding individual Robert T. McKee by hosting this exhibition which features the work of student artists in kindergarten through grade 12.

Due to the immense number of entries (more than 1,300 in 2008), the walls of the Lower and Upper West Galleries are covered from top to bottom with two-dimensional art works. These include works created with crayons, colored pencils, pastels, watercolors, oil and acrylic paints; in addition to photographs and mixed-media pieces. Three-dimensional works created from clay, wire, found objects and other materials are displayed on pedestals throughout the galleries. Altogether the works create a vibrant and eclectic display of the creativity of San Joaquin County’s young artists.

The Haggin Museum is proud of its longstanding partnership with the schools of San Joaquin County and honored to again celebrate the effort and expression of young artists in our community..

PROFESSOR S. BRETT DEBOER SELECTED AS EXHIBITION JUDGE
Brett DeBoerS. Brett DeBoer, Professor of Graphic Design at the University of the Pacific has been selected as the judge for the 2009 McKee Student Art Exhibition.

A favorite of students since he began teaching at the University of the Pacific in 1999, DeBoer teaches all levels of graphic design, computer graphic design, production and graphic design history. He brings both playfulness and professionalism to the studio classroom and many of his former students are now active and successful designers.

In addition to his current work on historic typography, DeBoer is very involved in the Stockton community. He has done design and consulting work for the VoteSmart project and is involved in advocacy for a “total streets” approach to urban planning. He has also worked on park interpretation in Colorado and public art on Stockton’s Miracle Mile and in Weston Ranch.

A committed friend of The Haggin Museum, he taught a workshop during the J.C. Leyendecker exhibition in 2006, and an Art Adventures workshop based on the work of Vincent Van Gogh in 2007.
