become a docent

Haggin Museum Docents make connections with visitors, students, art & history, the community, and more!

What does a docent do?
Supports the museum’s Education Department by

  • Leading tours for visitors of all ages
  • Community outreach
  • Volunteering at events

Docents enhance the visitor experience and create connections between the museum’s collections and guests. Docents participate in continuing education taught by curators, guests speakers, and seasoned docents.

Training
The in-depth docent curriculum includes learning about the Haggin’s collection of 19th and 20th century art, as well as Stockton’s history and its context in the history of California. Courses in our Museums2Schools classroom program, Visual Thinking Strategies, and effective touring techniques round out the docent training.

Both history and art training are approximately 12 weeks each. The weekly classes meet on Tuesdays at the Haggin Museum.
