Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinore Pruitt Stewart

Exhibit Reads & Special Gallery Walk Through

Saturday, October 25, 2025 | 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Explore the vast landscapes of early 20th-century Wyoming through the eyes of Elinore Pruitt Stewart in Letters of a Woman Homesteader. Her spirited and heartfelt letters from her homestead, which began in 1909, are filled with wit, resilience, and a fierce sense of independence. Echoing photographer Lora Webb Nichols, Stewart documented the joys and challenges of frontier life with a keen eye for detail, capturing both the harshness of the land and the warmth of friendship and community.

This timeless classic intertwines seamlessly with our exhibit Lora Webb Nichols: Photographs Made, Photographs Collected, inviting readers to explore two perspectives on homesteading life: one through a lens, and the other through a pen.

Special Gallery Walk Through with the Curator

In addition to the regular Exhibit Reads programming, the Haggin invites guests to join curator, Nicole Jean Hill, for a walk-through of Lora Webb Nichols: Photographs Made, Photographs Collected 1899–1935 and its companion installation, which continues Nichols’ story into her later years in Stockton, California. The exhibition begins in the copper-mining community of Encampment, Wyoming, with portraits of miners, pioneer women, and daily life, and extends to images from the Children’s Home of Stockton, where Nichols worked for nearly two decades. As part of the walkthrough, Hill will read selections from Nichols’s poetry, diaries, and memoirs, adding a personal dimension to the photographs and offering further insight into her life and the communities she documented.

Guests are not required to read the book to attend this event. All are welcome!
