The Stockton Art League juried art competition returns to The Haggin Museum this summer with more than 100 new works by long-standing local artists and newcomers from around the country.
This year the Stockton Art League celebrates its 80th anniversary. In the 1930s a group of artists met every week at The Haggin Museum to share their artistic talents. One of the group, Marcella Wood, conceived the idea to form an art club. Because of her efforts, the Stockton Art League was officially established in 1936 with Marcella Wood as president.
In 2001, thanks to the legacy and a generous contribution of benefactor Elsie May Goodwin, the Gallery opened its doors at 1902 Pacific Avenue, in Stockton’s Miracle Mile district, providing a permanent home for the Art League.
The original competition was conceived in 1951 to recognize, promote and reward excellence in Northern California art and was expanded in 2006 to include all of California, in addition to Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. It has grown since then to include artists from throughout the United States.
More than 400 works from nearly 200 artists were submitted and more than $5,000 will be awarded across five categories: acrylics & oils, water media, mixed media & graphics, sculpture and pastel.
The works on display in the Museum’s temporary exhibition galleries will be for sale through the Stockton Art League and a brochure with pricing information will be available in the galleries and at the front desk.
