Throughout the years it has been coined as a national pastime; however, baseball is more than that— it is part of a shared heritage and something that has defined the American experience. Author Walt Whitman declared, “It’s our game… America’s game.” Baseball, he said, “has the snap, go, fling, of the American atmosphere— belongs as much to our institutions, fits into them as significantly as our constitutions, laws: is just as important in the sum total of our historic life.”
Haggin Museum is pleased to partner with Bank of America to present Baseball: America’s Game, Art and Objects from the Bank of America Collection. This collection celebrates baseball’s place in the American story—its portrayal, in arts and letters, as the game and the nation have grown up together. This exhibition highlighting America’s National Pastime will be on view to the public from September 21 — November 19, 2017.
Baseball: America’s Game will excite young and old alike as it evokes the memories of playing on the sandlot or cheering for your favorite team. Visitors are invited to view George Brace’s photographs of baseball heroes; Jim Dow’s triptychs of major league stadiums; works by iconic photographers Garry Winogrand and Ernest C. Withers; illustrators J.C. Leyendecker and Lonie Bee; and writers Jimmy Breslin, W. P. Kinsella, and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Bank of America’s Art in Our Communities Program, established in 2008, has loaned more than 120 exhibitions to museums around the world. As the leading supporter of the arts and culture in the United States, Bank of America created this program to offer museums the opportunity to present shows curated from the company’s extensive collection of paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, and art objects.
